Our Library's Legacy Estrella Navarette
Estrella was a student at Fitch Mountain whose love for books and reading continues to inspire our students. Estrella lived in Healdsburg with her family and grew up attending HUSD schools. Her love for reading began as a baby when she started reading at the age of three. Books provided her the opportunity to meet interesting people, visit new places, and learn about the world.
At the age of eleven, she was diagnosed with a rare type of leukemia. During her illness Estrella read hundreds of books. Her favorite authors were R.L. Stine, who wrote the Goosebumps series and Ann Martin, who wrote the Baby-Sitter's Club series.
Due to the severity of her illness Estrella was selected to make a wish through the Make a Wish Foundation; her wish was to have a library named in her honor. Although her first wish was to travel the world, her illness would not allow it. Instead she noticed that many buildings were named after older men and that "children were rarely honored on this planet", so to name a library after her was a perfect fit.
Originally the library at Foss Creek was dedicated to her in October of 1995, but when the school moved to the Fitch Mountain Campus a decision was made to open the library here and name it the Estrella Library. Estrella continues to inspire students to read through her story and passion for books. We carry her memory and continue to tell her story every year.
